Getting to know the Cuchara Valley

The beautiful Cuchara Valley is located to the west of the Spanish Peaks and east of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in south-central Colorado.  With its Mountain views, unique rock formations and lush green pasture land, it is our humble opinion that the Cuchara Valley Hwy 12 is one of the most scenic highways in the great state of Colorado. It is also our favorite part of the Scenic Highway of Legends.

The goal of this site is to share information on our favorite places and things to do in the Cuchara Valley and the surrounding areas.

In this video you can experience the beautiful drive along Hwy 12 from La Veta to Cuchara Mountain Park, ending with one of our favorite local hikes up the Baker Creek Trail.

Cuchara is a charming mountain village tucked away on the Highway of Legends (Hwy 12). There is a quaint downtown area, consisting of several colorful shops, a lodge and several popular restaurants.

The town is surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest and the Cucharas River flows through town.  It is at elevation 8,500 feet.

There are many neighborhoods along Hwy 12, including the Panadero neighborhood - home to the Cuchara Mountain Park - located 3 miles south of Cuchara Village.
